Evolution of the Fittest

October 6th, 2009

In the evolution of any species or technology, it is the strongest and fastest and most capable that perseveres. This week, I had the pleasure of joining our fellow WiMAX champions at the ITU Telecom World 2009 conference in Geneva, Switzerland, where it became clear to me that WiMAX still has a leg-up in the evolutionary race to the 4G finish line.
The WiMAX Forum and executives from Clearwire, Beceem, Cisco, Huawei, Samsung, Intel, UQC, Yota and others were all on-hand at the conference to show support for WiMAX as our ecosystem continues to grow and expand the global WiMAX footprint. Already at 500 deployments across more than 145 countries, WiMAX is showing it has the chops to maintain its market lead as the first commercially available 4G technology worldwide.
And Clearwire has recently taken several steps toward that end, as well. With today’s announcement of new infrastructure partnerships with Alvarion and ZTE to build out WiMAX in Spain; our recent agreements with Russia’s Yota and Japan’s UQ Communications; and with the robust vendor structure we have in place throughout North America, we’re doing our part to drive the evolution of this technology forward.
As we continue to band together with international technology powerhouses to change the very face of mobile broadband, perhaps what we’re doing is not evolution at all – but revolution.

Clearwire – In the Sweet Spot

July 23rd, 2009

I’ve been asked recently what excites me most about becoming part of the Clearwire team. And, as I blog from a CLEAR-powered, un-wired laptop in Las Vegas’ Town Square, my answer is easy.

Convergence.

Clearwire is the first company to bring together the two biggest trends in the history of high tech – broadband Internet and Mobile.   The new Clear 4G WiMax service combines them into the first “super-fast mobile Internet” service.  We are only beginning to understand how this combination will change people’s lives – but one thing’s for sure:  it will do so profoundly.  When we’re done, people everywhere will have the magic of the Internet with them, wherever they go.  The convergence of these two mega-trends positions Clearwire in the sweet spot of demand and opportunity…and potential for growth.

Just ten years ago, both broadband Internet and mobile phones were more about convenience, or even luxury.  I don’t have to convince you how significant the Internet has been and how it has made the world smarter and better connected.

Some people who looked on the mobile industry believed that mobile would never be more than an interesting technology niche. Today, mobile phones are for virtually everyone, and they have changed how we live.  Mobile phones are even replacing landlines in homes at ever-increasing rates.  In fact, more than 20% of U.S. households today have ONLY a mobile phone, which is more households than have only landline service, according to a recent study done by the CDC.

More than ever before, a connection of these technologies is beginning to be made, and we are in the fortunate position to be the first to deliver on it.  The result will be just as transformational as the wireline Internet has been, and just as significant as mobile has been.  Today we’re bringing it to the heart of Las Vegas – transforming 638 square miles of the gaming metropolis into a virtual WiMAX hot spot – by providing services and devices that will allow a mobile broadband connection anywhere within the coverage area.

With download speeds of 3 to 6 mbps and bursts over 10, and nothing more than a simple, plug-in-and-go USB modem, we’re making this process fast and easy. So you can be in the sweet spot, too.
