Clearwire, Sprint and Comcast Announce Expanded 4G Coverage in Baltimore, D.C. and New Markets

April 25th, 2011

We’re buzzing with excitement here on the CLEAR Blog about some serious coverage expansions we’ve rolled out recently. After completing an aggressive network build in 2010, Clearwire teamed up with partners Sprint and Comcast to make improvements to our capacity and coverage. Now more people in the Mid-Atlantic region can hop on the real 4G train.

We flipped the CLEAR 4G switch in Baltimore last June bringing the magic of mobile broadband to residents and visitors alike. Thanks to our talented team of engineers, a total of 1.75 million people now have access to our service! And because of this awesome expansion, other Maryland cities – including Arbutus, Arnold, Severn, South gate, Woodlawn and Perry Hill – are getting a taste of the 4G life. “This is great news for Sprint 4G customers in the Baltimore area, where we launched the first ever 4G network [XOHM] in 2008,” said Iyad Tarazi, Sprint Vice President of Development and Engineering.

An additional 288,067 people in the nation’s capitol have access to our super-fast take-it-with-you service. Approximately 2.81 million politicians, lobbyists, and citizens alike can now agree one thing: CLEAR 4G is the only way to go. We also expanded our network coverage to a few new cities including Manassas and Chantilly, Virginia.

As Mike Nash, our Mid-Atlantic regional general manager said, “We are committed to providing the best service experience in the area and anywhere within the Clearwire 4G network.” That means you get to enjoy the ease and mobility of 4G whenever you’re in our coverage area, whether it’s streaming Pandora while relaxing at the park or sharing twitpics with your friends while taking in a baseball game.

These two cities aren’t the only areas in our coverage map to get a boost in coverage. Previously we announced additional coverage in Boise, Sacramento, Los Angeles, and everyone’s favorite windy city, Chicago. We couldn’t be more pleased to be able to give consumers what they want and welcome more people into our 4G family.

Earth Day is Every Day at Clearwire

April 22nd, 2011

Earth Day is a time for us to reflect on the ways we can make this planet a healthy living space for generations to come. Here at Clearwire, our engineers had an Earth Day mindset when they went to work building our environmentally-friendly cabinets that house 4G base stations. These cabinets ultimately reduce the amount of energy consumed by our cell sites, and in turn reduce our carbon footprint on planet Earth. So in honor of this special day, we thought we’d tell you a little bit more about these “green” cabinets.

Generally speaking, we utilize the same type of cabinet to house our equipment – called base stations – at each cell site, but depending on the outside temperature we use one of two different cooling systems. The cost of energy needed to cool cell sites is one of the most expensive single operating expenses wireless operators incur. By making our cooling systems and cabinets as efficient as possible, we not only reduce our operating costs, but we also reduce our carbon footprint.

In some markets, like those in the Pacific Northwest where temperatures remain relatively mild, less energy is needed to control cell site temperatures. So in these cooler markets, we use DAC cabinets. DAC stands for Direct Ambient Cooled, meaning these cabinets draw in ambient outside air through high-quality air filters and push out the warm air generated from the base station. This process naturally keeps the equipment cool. No a/c necessary! And the energy needed to keep these sites’ temperatures under control is estimated to be 90% less than what our older cabinets required. We’re sure Mother Nature appreciates that.

In other markets, where the stifling climate makes air conditioning a necessity (hello Hotlanta!), we use a cooling system called AIO, which appropriately stands for All-In-One. The AIO cabinets filter in outside air to cool the equipment – just like the DAC cabinet. But when the temperature gets too hot outside (we’re talking 100+ degrees people), the AIO closes the damper door and turns on its own air conditioner to continue keeping the equipment cool. What does this ultimately mean? Well, most air conditioning systems use a constant speed compressor and that causes it to cycle on and off whenever the heat gets a little uncomfortable. So ours essentially is smart enough to recognize when it is absolutely necessary for the a/c to kick on. Otherwise it just uses outside air to keep the equipment cool. Pretty cool, huh?

In addition, for both DAC and AIO cabinets, as we add more equipment in our cabinets to support the data needs of our growing customers, these solutions adapt to the increased equipment load to keep them cool. This keeps Clearwire from spending more money to upgrade the cooling system as our sites grow. We currently have 516 of these new cabinets deployed in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Denver, Sacramento, San Jose, and San Francisco, and we plan to only use these green cabinets in future builds.

Now it’s your turn. What are you doing today (or every day) to make the earth a better place?

Clearwire and Sprint (peanut butter and jelly, peas and carrots…you get the idea)

April 19th, 2011

We’re pretty proud of the Sprint and Clearwire match – it’s a partnership that’s been one of the most productive in the U.S. wireless market to date. Together we’ve deployed the first true 4G network in North America and made 4G a household word. So, we’re happy to report today that this partnership continues with an updated long-term wholesale agreement between Clearwire and Sprint.

There are a number of details that you can read about here, but the really big news for Clearwire is that Sprint will commit a minimum of $1 billion in cash to Clearwire for 4G wholesale services. This money will be used to support Clearwire’s ongoing operations, and it underscores the interdependent and strategic relationship we have with Sprint.

Our all IP-network is Sprint’s 4G network. (It’s also the same 4G network used by Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Best Buy, Cbeyond, Mitel, and Locus Telecommunications to offer mobile broadband to their customers.)  Our unmatched spectrum provides Sprint with a strategic advantage in terms of network capacity. As data usage rises, the need for a rich spectrum portfolio will become even more acute.

With the only 4G wholesale network in the country, coverage for more than 120 million people, and a growing customer and revenue base, we look forward to continuing our partnership with Sprint to deliver outstanding 4G service.
