New York City Launch Event Calendar

October 25th, 2010

On Oct. 19th we announced that our 4G network will be officially launching in New York City on November 1st (Yes, we know some of you early adopters have already been seeing a 4G signal for a while now!). To celebrate our largest market launch to date, we have some exciting events in store for NYC residents and visitors alike. All of these events are free to attend so grab your friends and family and stop by.

CLEAR 4G officially launches in NYC on November 1st so to celebrate we are inviting everyone to join us on the ice rink at Bryant Park for FREE ice skating. CLEAR will be covering the cost of everyone’s skates and bag check from 11AM to 10PM on 11/1. We will have a photo station set up next to the rink where you can get your photo taken with your friends, then we will email them directly to your inbox using CLEAR 4G.

A CLEAR Lounge will be set up near the rink where free hot chocolate will be pouring all day, plus the latest CLEAR 4G devices will be available for you to demo while you thaw out.

RSVP to this free event and invite your friends and family!

Come help Jürgen Scheible, the inventor of MobiSpray, and local graffiti artist Andy Dolan (AKA PURE) paint the façade of the Flatiron Building. If you are thinking to yourself, “Why would I want to watch paint dry?” think again. The artists will be using MobiSpray, which is an interactive digital art experience that turns a mobile device into a virtual spray-can than can project artistic creations and visions onto buildings. Here is a video of MobiSpray in action to give you an idea of just how cool this will be:

Jürgen and PURE will be showing off their artistic capabilities for the first hour, then CLEAR will invite the public to “paint” the side of the Flatiron Building with their own artistic renderings. Photographers will be on-site snapping photos of everyone’s work, which will then be posted to our Facebook page.

Dates Announced for NYC, LA, and SF 4G Launches

October 17th, 2010

The stage is now set in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco for CLEAR 4G to launch in the coming months. People living in or visiting New York City can expect to receive a 4G signal come November 1st. A month later on December 1st, Los Angeles will join New York City and over 55+ other markets that are covered by CLEAR 4G. In late December, San Francisco will be lit up with 4G service.

After each city launches, people will start to see CLEAR retail stores opening and launch events throughout the city. Consumers and businesses should also expect to see additional network expansions and a wide-range of independent marketing and advertising initiatives.

The CLEAR Blog will be posting a calendar of launch events sometime this week for New York City’s launch events. Further details for both Los Angeles and San Francisco events will be made available in the weeks prior to their respective launch dates.

Clear Spot 4G Employee Review

October 13th, 2010

Hi, my name is Dan O. and I work in the IT Operations group at Clearwire HQ here in Kirkland, WA. Being in the IT department, I have had the privilege of using most every device that Clearwire has to offer and most recently I was able to get my hands on the new Clear Spot 4G. I wanted to share my experience, including why this device is important not only to IT professionals, but to people of all computing and internet skill levels.

In recent years there have been big movements to make operating systems based on the Linux platform more accessible to the home user. Systems such as Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS are beginning to break through the “Windows” barrier with secure, stable, and best of all FREE operating systems! These systems are extremely simple to use and work nearly perfect with little configuration needed. There are however, due to the differences in programming languages, some pitfalls to using these systems. Hardware support on these Linux based systems has come a very long way, but there are still some limitations. If there is a piece of hardware one wants to use that isn’t internally supported by the operating system it’s extremely difficult, if not impossible, for most people to get it working. For example, currently there are no certified drivers available for most of our CLEAR mobile products. The USB modems and internal embedded wimax adapters simply do not work on a Linux based operating system. This isn’t a big problem if you have a desktop computer at home. You can use the Clear home modem and attach to your wireless router, but what is one to do if you have a Linux based operating system and want to have mobile internet without being limited to finding a hotspot somewhere? The answer is the Clear Spot!

If you don’t already know, the Clear Spot is a self-contained CLEAR modem and wireless hotspot similar to a wireless router you would use at home. It is powered by a rechargeable battery so you can charge it up, put it in your pocket and have 4G CLEAR internet service on up to 8 devices at once anywhere in the CLEAR coverage area. For me, the most important thing about the Clear Spot is that because it acts as a wireless hotspot, it makes no difference what operating system I use. If you can connect to a wireless router with your system, you can connect to the Clear Spot and get CLEAR internet anywhere in the coverage area with no hardware drivers needed!

One day I’m hoping there will be Linux based drivers available for all CLEAR devices. Until then, the Clear Spot is hands down the best device on the market for your mobile internet needs and I can tell you from experience that once you try it you won’t want to give it up!
