4G, please meet Baltimore, Kansas City, and Washington DC

We are inching closer towards our goal of providing 4G coverage to 120 million people by the end of the year! At the stroke of midnight, June 1, 2010, Clearwire made it official that Baltimore is now covered with CLEAR 4G. The new coverage zone extends over 720+ square miles and stretches to places such as Bel Air, Annapolis, Owings Mills, and Essex. Since we added coverage, we also needed to have someone watch over this expansion. That it why Dean Young, who some of you may have had the chance to meet at our Baltimore meetup last week, has also been named the General Manager for the Baltimore area.

Residents of central Washington DC and Kansas City, Kansas will now see parts of their cities covered in shades of green on our updated coverage maps. That’s because they too are now officially covered by CLEAR 4G.

CLEAR 4G Meetup in Baltimore

This past Tuesday CLEAR held a meetup at Mex Restaurant in Baltimore to give people a sneak peak at CLEAR 4G before it goes live in Baltimore in the near future. We had folks stop by from groups and blogs like the Baltimore Node, the Plan8 Podcast, SmartLogic Solutions, The Gavin Show, and welcometoBaltimorehon.com to name a few.

When guests weren’t enjoying the taco bar they got to try out our 4G for themselves on several machines; one with an imbedded WiMAX chip, one with a 4G USB device, and even a new portable wireless hotspot device that has yet to be released to the public. Speeds were consistently hovering around 4-5mpbs up and 1.75mbs down- not bad for being in the middle of the city!

CLEAR Baltimore’s General Manager Dean Young took the floor midway through the evening to hold a QnA session with everyone. People definitely brought some good questions and we hope everyone received the answers they came looking for. We event let three people walk out the door with some 4G devices to test out on their own.

Residents of Baltimore will be blanketed in 4G bliss in the coming weeks. We will be sure to update the blog when service becomes available. For photos of the event stop by Plan8’s picture set on Flickr.
